Workshop on Implementation of DDI3 - Advanced Topics
November 2-6, 2009
Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany

Goals
The goal of this symposium-style workshop is to produce a detailed use case literature covering the technical aspects of DDI3 implementation. Some selected exploratory topics like interoperability with other domains and technologies will also be examined.

Description of the Workshop
Implementations and planned implementations will be presented by a number of attendees and discussed by other presenters and invited experts. This workshop provides an opportunity to share experiences with other advanced implementers of DDI3 and experts in the DDI3 technical specification, obtain a real time peer review and create the beginnings of a strong use case literature for DDI3 implementations. The hosts and participants in the workshop are expected to look critically at the use cases presented and provide any input that is appropriate.

Expected Results
Use cases discussed at the workshop will be written up and published in the new DDI Alliance On-line Working Paper Series.

Venue
The workshop will take place at the Leibniz Center for Informatics, Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany. The non-profit centre is a member of the Leibniz Association and is funded jointly by the German federal government and a number of state governments. The venue provides an intense working atmosphere in a nice remote region. Several seminar rooms and cafeteria while the day, and leisure rooms like wine bar and billiard room while the evening promote intense discussion and communication. Accommodation costs at Dagstuhl including full board is 60 Euro/day/person (subsidized rate). The maximum number of participants is 21 people.

Sponsors
This workshop is sponsored by the DDI Alliance, GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, Minnesota Population Center (MPC), and Open Data Foundation (ODaF).

Contact
The names of interested organizations and individuals should be sent to ddi-expert-workshop@icpsr.umich.edu. Please provide contact information, area of interest, and area of expertise for each individual, information regarding DDI 3 implementation, and a statement of what each individual can contribute to the workshop. Any questions regarding this event should be directed to ddi-expert-workshop@icpsr.umich.edu.

Working Paper No. 57

Abstract
Metadata, or data about data, play a crucial rule in social sciences to ensure that high quality documentation and community knowledge are properly captured and surround the data across its entire life cycle, from the early stages of production to secondary analysis by researchers or use by policy makers and other key stakeholders. The paper provides an overview of the social sciences metadata landscape, best practices and related information technologies. It particularly focuses on two specifications - the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) and the Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange Standard (SDMX) - seen as central to a global metadata management framework for social data and official statistics. It also highlights current directions, outlines typical integration challenges, and provides a set of high level recommendations for producers, archives, researchers and sponsors in order to foster the adoption of metadata standards and best practices in the years to come.

Keywords: social sciences, metadata, data, statistics, documentation, data quality, XML, DDI, SDMX, archive, preservation, production, access, dissemination, analysis

The UK Data Archive would like to announce the release of its new suite of web pages providing guidance on Data Management and Sharing. The pages aim to provide data creators, data managers and data curators with best practice strategies and methods for creating, preparing and storing shareable datasets. Advice has been divided into a number of key areas or modules providing detailed information on each topic. These are:

· Sharing data - why and how?
· Consent, confidentiality and ethics
· Copyright
· Data documentation and metadata
· Data formats and software
· Data storage, back-up, and security

In addition to these web pages, bespoke advice and training are provided by UKDA staff throughout the life span of a research project - from the initial award application, through the data creation phase to the end of the active research phase and to the final storage and dissemination of data. A comprehensive frequently asked questions web page is also available.

See: http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/sharing/

A printed brochure is forthcoming which will be ready for our Data Sharing event on 13 March 2009 (http://www.esds.ac.uk/news/eventdetail.asp?id=2140)

The significance of data management for social survey research

Date: 27 January 2009
Location: Seminar Room, SSRC Building, University of Essex

This one-day seminar on 27 January 2009, organised by the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) and the National Centre for e-Social Science
research node on Data Management through e-Social Science (DAMES), will explore approaches to, and resources for, improving standards of data
management in the social science research process. Here, data management is taken to refer to operations which are typically conducted by social
researchers themselves, and which involve handling and manipulating micro-datasets. These sorts of operation, often referred to as data handling, data cleaning, or matching datasets together, prove in many instances to be a major component of a social research project, yet they are often underestimated by social researchers themselves, and they are rarely the subject of extended methodological attention.

This event brings together speakers from a range of data management services and resource providers including Paul Lambert and Vernon Gayle
of DAMES and representatives from ESDS and the Secure Data Service.

The meeting is free to attend, but places are limited so booking is essential.

Further details including programme and booking form:
